Broadly speaking, there are two types of electronic components - "through hole" or "surface mount". "Through-hole" components have pins that pass through holes in the PCB and are usually soldered on the other side; "surface-mount" components sit on the surface of the PCB. Through-hole components are mechanically stronger, but surface-mount components are smaller and better suited for automated assembly.
