What is VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) ?

VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) is a hardware description language originally developed by the United States Department of Defense to describe the design of high-speed integrated circuits (VHSIC). Now it has been widely used in the design, simulation and verification of digital circuits. VHDL is part of the IEEE standard 1076-1987, the current version is IEEE 1076-2008.
