Volkswagen: Chips have been raised by 800%! The supplier canceled the shipment the night before!

According to European Automotive News, Thomas Schaefer, head of the Volkswagen Group brand, said in an interview a few days ago that due to the “extremely chaotic” supply chain, the annual output of cars at the company’s main plant in Wolfsburg, Germany, is much less than 400,000 vehicles, less than half of the production capacity.

He pointed out that the supply chain is at its most “chaotic” when suppliers cancel shipments with one night’s notice, and chip markups of up to 800%. Referring to the price of chips on the open market, he bluntly stated that “the price is ridiculously high.”

In October, Murat Askel, head of purchasing at Volkswagen, revealed that the company was signing a direct purchase agreement to address the shortage of parts. Askel also said that in new important areas such as software, Volkswagen has less influence as a buyer and less bargaining power.
